PART 2 · Hardware
3D Filter Layer — Deciding Whether You Need Gap Glass
Q
When is Gap Glass needed, and how do you decide whether to use it?
A
Whether Gap Glass is needed — and how thick it should be — is determined by the optical design.
In glasses-free 3D display design, the optical distance (Gap) between the Color Filter and the 3D Lens Sheet is critical. The required Gap is generally calculated by considering the following factors together.
📍 Decision Criteria
· OVD (Optical Viewing Distance) — the target viewing distance
· Display Pixel Pitch (PPI) — the display's pixel density
· CL — the distance from the Color Filter to the Lens
📍 How It Is Calculated
The total required Gap is calculated from the viewing distance and OVD; the remaining thickness, after subtracting the display's internal structure (CL), is then made up with Gap Glass or similar.
For example:
· Target Gap: 3.0 mm
· CL: 0.8 mm
→ Additional Gap needed: 3.0 − 0.8 = 2.2 mm
In other words, the missing 2.2 mm must be filled with some optically stable structure.
Ways to Form the GapCharacteristics
Air GapThickness cannot be kept uniform, so it is not viable.
Thicker OCAA thicker OCA layer negatively affects the 3D effect.
Gap GlassRecommended approach — optically stable.
Note
In some Lenticular Lens structures, reducing the LP (Lens Pitch) can allow a design without Gap Glass.
However, this can introduce trade-offs such as reduced brightness and a smaller 3D viewing zone, and it is not applicable to every display environment.
